I am so sorry to report that there was a terrible shortage of olives this year, with many factors behind the shortfall. Linda Tenbrink gave me a headsup more than a month ago, letting me know that we would not get any olives at all this year.
We have been working for a couple of years with a new grower in the Sierra Foothills, not too far from our fantastic Oleta Vineyard. This year, in order to make up for the absence of Tenbrink olio, we are turning to this orchard for two single cultivar oils, both milled at Il Fiorello-- the amazing millers of the Tenbrink olio since year 1. I really think that no one in the United States is working at their level of quality and so it was crucial for me to offer an oil milled by them.
We got what we could from this orchard in a tough year. 43 liters of olio.
Perhaps motivated by scarceness, perhaps because I had a moment for advance planning, we have found beautiful bottles for this year's oil. They are Tortugas-- the same Spanish 500 ml Port bottles that we used for the our first few olio releases. We are offering you one bottle of each cultivar, harvested and milled separately: Coratina and Picual.
I have also designed and ordered beautiful old school labels for this year's oil, based on tile designs uncovered at Mt. Vesuvius. We won't get them from the printers until immediately after Thanksgiving.
We are picking these oils up on Monday November 24 on the way to Thanksgiving in Santa Fe and will bottle the oils immediately on our return. We CAN'T GET THEM TO YOU BY THANKSGIVING-- but I guarantee that if you order them by December 14, you will have them by Christmas.
We will have 43 two-bottle sets to offer this year. 43 liters of oil total. We will begin shipping on December 4.
