This is 100% Zinfandel from the abandoned Gateway Vineyard on the edge of Rancho Cucamonga. The drought nearly killed the vineyard this year; we are not allowed to farm it, but thank goodness that we are allowed to harvest it. We got in a the end of harvest and picked what we could on one of the only 100 degree days of the harvest.

The berries were tiny and dark. We left behind anything raisined or sun-burned. The wine is dark and intense-- not rich or syrupy, but sharp and powerful.  It is a deep and structured red wine, nothing like our light and lithe Heart of Sand; Zinfandel behaves so differently from Grenache in these hot sands.
