A truly beautiful red wine from another remarkable vineyard. The wine is 100% Grenache, from vines planted about 1910 as part of Secondo Guasti's orginal planting in Rancho Cucamonga. The history books portray the planting as mostly Zinfandel, but there is a surprising amount of Grenache that has survived: in fact, in two vineyards, separated by a few miles.
In 2021, we harvested the fruit in the middle of August, but in beautifully cool weather. There was so little fruit this year, because of the drought, that we made only two fermentations and about two barrels of wine. Just as last year, we did not punchdown or pumpover, but let the wine ferment with an undisturbed floating cap.
The wine is soft and light but somewhat feral and very intense. The fruit grows in hot sands, east of Los Angeles, and is a beacon for the kind of beautiful light wines that can come from warm regions.
