We are so fortunate to work with this vineyard, one of the most important in California. it was planted to 100% Zinfandel in 1918 in anticipation of Prohibition-- not by a winery but to ship grapes to home winemakers on the East Coast. It is now controlled and farmed by the Galleano family and is at the heart of everything that they do.
in 2024, we harvested the Zinfandel for red wine earlier than we had before, right after the fruit for rosé. We made three separate fermentations; the first eventually went into the Ripasso, the other two, harvested a few days later, went into this wine.
It is deeply dark, nearly black, but light in weight and somehow fresh and tannic at the same time. In other words, the wine has neither the fruitiness of some light-bodied zinfandel, nor it is it in any way jammy or raisined. What it most reminds me of serious Chianti-- and, in fact, the Galleano family, who control the amazing vineyard, have made a "Chianti" from the vineyard since the repeal of prohibition.
