At Penn Cellars, on the LIRR level, right in the heart of Penn Station.
I can't quite believe this. It feels kind of like a dream, through the lens of Alfred Hitchcock in North by Northwest. A tutored wine tasting in a wine shop on the main thoroughfare of Penn Station, at the peak of rush hour.
I saw this shop for the first time when I was in town in May for our Palomino-focused 12 Seats at the Chelsea Hotel-- and I could not quite believe it. A very sophisticated store, with super serious wines, from modest to fancy, but all delicious and well chosen-- focused on providing commuters with fantastic bottles to open on the train and perhaps finish at home. Everything from wine in a can to allocated Champagnes.
I thought: I want to stand here, in the middle of this, commuters rushing around, thinking about exhaustion and pleasure at once, and pour complicated, unexpected, wines.
And so I am. On Wednesday the 18th, from 6 to 7 pm. Show up for a tutored tasting of these wines:
Los Angeles River Wine Company, Disco Essence, 2023
Los Angeles River Wine Company, Lopez Rose, 2023
Los Angeles River Wine Company, Riverside Red, 2023
Scholium Project, Prince in his Caves, 2019
Red Hook Winery, La Geante Reserve White Wine, 2019
and a couple of surprises. You will be able to purchase wines and bring them home or get on the train and drink them in motion. I am so grateful to David Bruno, owner and mastermind behind Penn Liquors.
The tasting is free. But please sign up so that we know how many of you to expect, and then show up, and bring friends. See you Wednesday.
